Pleasantly SurprisedBy ZoomDocI ordered this shoe after having returned 2 pairs of NB 1906 which is a 200 dollar shoe retail. Go check zappos. This shoe is every bit as good as those shoes with better cushioning and better arch and pronation support for half the price. This is the running shoe deal of the year. The 1227 likely due out by summer of 2011 but who cares and it won't be at this price. I have some Brooks Beast which is highly cushioned and expected a big let down with these. I was very surprised with the quality feel and fit of these shoes. These will not be returned. I also returned the Asics gel Kinetics 3 so I have something to compare shoes with. Also have nike shox with forefoot air zoom and am very happy with these but they are wearing out and I needed to reload. I'm a stickler for forefoot cushioning and shock resilience as well as some energy return. I'm a big guy 240 lbs and the reviews about lack of forefoot cushioning are bunk. I got these in width EE and this was perfect although normal D is what I usually get. I do not like tight fitting running shoes but absolutely will not tolerate heel slip. So far so good. I heard of New Balance carries lots of running shoes and I thought they are like Nike or Adidas, but "less" trendy. However, at a very casual conversation with a friend; she said she needed to buy a pair of New Balance running shoes for her mother as the doctor directed. A friend on the side jumped in and said only the MADE IN USA ones are good but expensive. I pointlessly browsed the web on one random day and found this 993 model. I hesitated for 2 weeks before buying them because I am on a budget. However, Amazon has the cheapest price and what I paid is far more worth than my feet thanking me.I have low arch (flat feet) and I thought it was a birth defect and never told anyone except my mom. Good stability shoe for a pronater.By JonPWillsThese shoes are very good on your feet and follow what I will call the older and better style feel that you would find in a new balance shoe a few years ago.The foam is a little softer than I expected it to be and it has gel cushioning in the front as well as the rear of the shoe. It is ideal for heavy weighted runners and super supportive.It has a fine medial post to help control pronation and overall its built in arcs are average. In all I would say it is an excellent design and I reccomend this shoe if you need what it provides.As always though I am not a profesional when it comes to shoes. In addition the 992s (this model's predecessor) is designed for runners with a slight pronate which I have. Stability is what this shoe does and does super well for me. That was a couple of decades ago and I have not purchased a different brand or style of running shoe since then.I was a bit surprised when New Balance discontinued the foam cushining 991 and replaced it with the gel cushioned 992. It took a bit of getting used to but I made the transition to 992s. With the 992s also came the option to get several different colors of 992s: the 991s always only came in grey.I was elated to learn though that the company had again upgraded to 993s which includes a combination of foam and gel. I think they're lighter than 992s too and the feel on first putting on a pair of 993s is very similar to putting on a pair of 991s. Be wary on buying from the internet b/c the sizing on this shoe is different than previously. In both the 1221 and 1222, I was an 8. In this shoe, I'm a 9! I ordered the 8.5 and now I have to return it-- even that's too small. The toe box in particular seems a lot tighter than on previous shoes.
